Showcasing locally grown produce and foods, Executive Chef Chris Kobayashi draws much of the inspiration for his dishes from regular trips to the farmers market and organic farms in the area. His menu evolves to meet the seasonality of the area’s products, yet his unique approach to the American Bistro remains constant. The Artisan menu features local and organic produce, and proteins that are wild caught or sustainable farmed with no growth hormones or antibiotics. The wine list features top product from Paso’s most respected vintners as well as wines from other sought after regions in California.

“AJ Spurs” has always been a local favorite. I like to call the experience a “cowboy meal”. It is one of those places that locals take their out of town visitors to, as it is a good way to see what North San Luis Obispo County is all about. On the weekends, expect to wait an hour or so in the bar so make reservations early. There are video games to keep the kids busy while you sip a huge martini (served in a ball jar). Once you get seated, you wills start eating immediately. The menu offers the usual steaks, ribs, tri-tip. Personal favorites are the calamari steak, the Twin Peaks (twin filets mignon served two ways), and the carne asada (served with a cheese enchilada). All entrees (even the kids meals) are served with family -style starters: vegetable beef soup, tequila beans, salsa, a green salad, and accompaniments: rice pilaf, home style potatoes, garlic bread, and dessert: an after dinner liquor such as Irish cream, brandy, cream de cocoa or a root beer float.
